TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A museum celebrating Tampa’s rich baseball history could be opening up in a Hall of Fame player’s boyhood home.
The Tampa Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/IWtkwh ) that a local museum society will ask Hillsborough County commissioners Wednesday to lease a plot of land it owns to the city of Tampa.
Then the boyhood home of famed player and manager Al Lopez would be moved to the site for the museum. The Florida Department of Transportation has already agreed to move the house.
Lopez, who died in 2005, was the first Tampa native to play in the major leagues. He was followed by many others. Fellow natives Fred McGriff and Tino Martinez told the Tribune they are excited about the prospect of a baseball museum in the city.
